Seussical the Musical
By MaryKent Wolff
Dr. Seuss is a classic. From The Lorax to Green Eggs and Ham, to The Cat in the Hat, his books are read all across America. Children everywhere enjoy these rhyming books.
Have you ever thought of a musical based on his most famous books combined? Broadway did, and Rugby Middle School found out about it.
Everyone who thought they had musical talent tried out. I wasn’t sure, but I decided to give it a shot.
A couple weeks later, I got a text from a friend.
“Congrat’s, Bird Girl!” it read.
It wasn’t the part I had really wanted, but I should probably start small. Yeah, right.
I was the only six grade bird girl. I realized that when I had said starting small, I meant a small lead part. You could find us during most song singing, dancing, or just flopping our feather boas around.
It was great. I made new friends and we sang and danced our little pre-teen hearts out. Being me, I tripped a couple times, but no one noticed.
Opening night was nerve-wracking. During the first song, Oh the Thinks You can Think, I started the wrong way. Oops.
The rest of the night went well.
On the second night, my strings teacher, who happen to do vocals, glared at us.
“I am disappointed, especially in Solla Sollew. That’s supposed to be a lullaby! Anyway, Bird Girls! “ We looked at each other nervously.
“YOU ROCKED THE HOUSE!!!” She exclaimed. Then everyone started clapping.
On the third and final night, we did our best show yet. My Aunt Cathy and Uncle Dave showed up ‘unexpectedly’. The cast and crew went to get ice cream, and we had a blast.
We didn’t want it to be over. It was a great experience. I’m going to try out again next year.
Looking back, I’d have to say that Amazing Gertrude was my favorite song. I got to be my inner self- a dork.
The main characters were Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, The Cat in the Hat, and Jojo the Who. They were all great, but I liked the bird girls the most.
